Integrated circuits, commonly referred to as chips or microchips, are electronic circuits in which components such as transistors, diodes, and resistors are integrally formed on a semiconductor material, typically silicon, to perform an electronic function.

A layout design (topography) refers to the three-dimensional disposition of the elements, at least one of which is an active element, and some or all of the interconnections of an integrated circuit, or such a disposition prepared for an integrated circuit intended for manufacture. Layout designs are also known as topographies or mask works of semiconductor chip products.
